I'm going to speed this section up a bit by just posting some pics of the next two weeks of this journey.  After a few pictures of Savana Georgia you will see some pictures of an old friends home in North Carolina and then some of Virginia Beach where Stephanne grew up. From there to Richmond to visit Steph's old childhood friend and then to her brothers home in Boydes Maryland. That took care of our stops below the Mason Dixon Line then it was off to Pennsulvania to my home town of Doylestown, beautiful Bucks County. It's wonderful stone farm houses still exist in abundance and large farms still exist. There are developments popping up but riding my bicycle on my old routes from Doylestown to New Hope Pa are still as I remember them. It still feels like home to me, that place is part of my dna.
We head up the coast from Savannah to Chapel Hill NC. An old cycling buddy from Doylestown Pa, Tom and his wife Ruth. We stayed there for two days and had a great time hanging, drinking fine beer and eating some great food. Their home was only a year old and they build a really fine place. I think it would be considered a Craftsman home, with an interior of quality. Hot as most of our southern part of this trip was, but I got a great 50 mile bike ride in with a cycling club in the area. Heat index 106!!! Oh well I'm a fool for torture. Don't have much to show you but here you go anyway.
Ok up the coast now from Georgia, with a short pit stop in Savannah. Cool town with tons of charactor. Major downtown area to shop around if you like that sort of thing. We as usual were drawn to the coffee shop first then to look around at the buildings and homes with blocks of downtown. Savannah looked alive and well, nice to see. Many original river front buildings still intact and full with businesses. Though that section of town seemed to attract the tourist, it was very old world looking. Downtown also just a block away was full of it's original buildings and at least three city blocks deep and maybe 5 city blocks long. Seemed like a great downtown with lots of streets beyond that area full of residents homes still looking like turn of the century stately homes. If I was a city guy and could handle the heat this would a town I would consider. Happened across this realy fine Roman Catholic church and lit a candle for me recently deceased father. Then up the coast line a few more hours to Darien Georgia, a small fishing town. Steph found here big tree here
Next stops Virginia Beach Va., Richmond Va. and Boydes Md.to visit.
Our favorite campsite was in downtown Philly. Right in the heart of Fish Town. I had planned to meet my friend in Philly but didn't now what we would do for a campsite in the middle of Philidelphia, so as usual for me I just went there anyway. Well we got there and the streets were one way streets with parking on both sides. We barely squeezes down his street and couldn't imagine a spot to park this rig let alone leaving it for even 15 minutes in this part of town...looked a bit rough. But I'd been living in such a placid area of California for so long, I thought maybe I was over reacting. We drove around the block once and found nowhere to park, we drove around again through these small tight streets hoping we would not hit a dead end or just be boxed in and there it was...a space big enough with Interstate 95 looming just above us. We ate, we drank, we played music with Scotts talented friends until late. The gang even spent some time in the RV with more music blasting into the dark streets of Philly. Steph and I were a bit more relaxed and a bit buzzed so we gambled and we spent the night right there in the Streets of Philidelphia.
My home town of Doylestown and the home I grew up in.
The stone farm houses of bucks county. Over 100,000 biking miles during my racing years in D-town were spend on these roads.
The famous Mercer home, Fonthill, right in Doylestown, about a mile from my childhood home. We decided to buy this old place for our own. It's a bit rough due to no real modern plumbing or electricity but we love it anyway. Steph is pictured here, happy to be using the crude though workable loo.
